THE CULTURAL, POLITICAL, AND SPIRITUAL ICONS THAT ARE THE OBAMAS

REMEMBERING THE BEGINNING: NOVEMBER 4, 2008

Today is the day that Mom has been waiting for. I wish she could see this in person but I know she’s watching from above and is as nervous as I am.

Okay. I need to do something. I’ll have a watch party. Yeah. I’ll just sneak a few printed photos off the company computer—those amazing photos. Him standing and speaking. Him walking and speaking. Him and Michelle sitting and talking on the campaign bus. She’s definitely giving him some guidance or support from a recent appearance. Them and the girls laughing. Black love and black family—exactly what we need to see right now. I love these photos.

I’ll text everyone I know, which is only a few people since I just moved to Atlanta, but they should all come and watch…and wait.

And we’ll wait because my mother waited. My grandparents waited. My great-aunts and uncles waited. My great-great grandparents waited. We will wait and hope. Barack told us to hope so we will hope and believe in him, for him.

HOURS LATER…

Okay it’s 7 p.m. and the polls have started to close. Where is everyone? Maybe they’re too nervous, I know I am. Sitting looking around at the photos I’ve hung around my 800 sq. ft. apartment brings a smile to my face.

No matter what, he has given me hope. He’s reminded me and every other black person around American that we can actually go for what we want. F&*# those racist and non-believers. After all that we’ve been through, he has finally stamped his name, and our race, into history with a memorable and honest presidential run. A presidential run by an honest African-American man. Maybe they will notice that there are more like him now.

AND THE 44TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN IS…

Tears stream down my cheeks and my heart is full of disbelief and thankfulness. Our first African-American President. Our FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN family in the white house. The slave house. What a statement for Americans—what a statement for our community. We see you First Family. Now let the work begin…
